From the cult TV show Mechanoids, we present Megabyte!

Megabyte

Mechanoids was filmed over 2 weeks in April 2002 in a disused warehouse in Glasgow. The show involved a number of challenges involving the combined skills of both a driver (Anthony) and the torso operator (Kane). Essentially, most games required grabbing something and moving around, with the addition of a paintball gun in some and another weapon in others. The set was somewhat unique and the atmosphere created a rather bizzare experience for all!

The base was supplied by BBC visual effects and was basically a fibre glass cladded steel frame with go-kart wheels and front casters... These were especially dificult to drive on an incline. The 'Carnaloid' pictured above was torn from 'The Nest'.

Megabyte was kitted out with various rustic weapons and originally a vertical claw... After arriving it was clear that this would not be practical and the arm was turned 90 degrees.

A Land Rover binacle made up Megabyte's face with two halogen spot lights illuminating the eyes.

A set of stobe lights on the rear add effect during filming.

After modification, the arm was mounted horizontally and with extended length aided grabbing props.

'The Furnace' involved some VERY big flame. So big in fact that you couldn't stand too close to the set when lit! Megabyte managed to survive though, even if a little scortched!
